The Vienna Northern Railway Station, the Nordbahnhof, was the terminus for lines running north and east toward Moravia, Bohemia, and Galicia, so it handled a steady flow of travelers from across the Habsburg lands. This print, made around 1900, is a view of that station in a set of European city photographs, with Vienna placed between Verona and the French and Italian cities that precede it in the album. That grouping suggests it was assembled as a traveler's record of rail journeys, when a railway terminal was often one of the first and last sights of a city. The station's architecture and the crowds and carriages around it give a sense of how central rail travel had become to urban life in the period.
