Granada, on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, was one of the oldest Spanish colonial cities in the Americas, and this stereograph shows its government railway station in the early 1900s. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1902 as one of many views of distant places sold for use in a stereoscope, a parlor viewer that gave a three-dimensional effect from two nearly identical photographs. Railways of this period were often promoted as signs of a country's progress, linking inland cities to Pacific ports and trade routes. The station's architecture and the people gathered outside offer a glimpse of how travel and commerce looked in Central America at the time.
