Gulistan Station sat at the mouth of the Kojak Tunnel on the Great Military Railway, the line the British built through the arid hills of Balochistan, in what is now Pakistan, to carry troops and supplies toward the Quetta frontier. William Henry Jackson made the view while photographing for the World's Transportation Commission's tour of the world in the mid-1890s, and *Harper's Weekly* printed it as a halftone in 1895. The tunnel was a demanding piece of engineering through rugged mountain terrain, and the picture shows how the station and its approach were set into the stony landscape at the edge of a steep, difficult climb.
