A station on the Yunnan section of the Lao Kay to Kunming railway is the focus here. The line ran from the provincial capital of Kunming south to the Vietnamese border at Lao Cai, and French interests built it in the first decade of the 1900s to link southwest China with French Indochina. The date of 1930 to 1940 is a tentative estimate from an unverified caption card, so the photograph may fall somewhat earlier or later. It offers a glimpse of the railway's buildings and surroundings in the years when the line was an important trade route.
