The line's summit station at Culebra marks the highest point of the Panama Railroad, where trains crossed the continental divide on the route between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The railroad opened in early 1855, after years of brutal labor in heat and disease, and this engraving appeared in *The Illustrated London News* that same spring, when the line was still news to European readers. Engravings like this one were often prepared from sketches, so the scene reflects the artist's view as much as the site itself. The record's date and details come from an unverified caption card, so it is worth checking them against the magazine page.
