Perched near the crest of White Pass, Summit Station sat on one of the most demanding stretches of the White Pass and Yukon Route, a railway built from Skagway, Alaska, toward the Yukon River during the Klondike gold rush of 1897 to 1899. Crews cut the line over steep grades and rugged granite, and the railroad carried prospectors, supplies and equipment inland along a route that had been brutal to travel on foot. Philadelphia photographer William H. Rau issued this stereograph as part of a numbered series of Klondike views, and its paired images convey the height and rough scale of the mountain country.
