The caption card's "Bridges" tracing points to one of the line's defining features: the route had to cross deep river gorges in the mountains of Yunnan. French interests built the railway in the early 1900s to connect Hanoi in French Indochina with Kunming, and it opened in 1910. Its engineering was among the most demanding of its era, and it remained an important trade route for the region for decades. The date on this print is uncertain and is estimated at 1930 to 1940, placing it during the line's busiest years.
