Titled for the last loop of the mountain railway climbing toward the Morenci Copper Mines in Arizona, this stereograph shows a train working its way up a steep grade to reach the mining camp. Around 1903, copper towns in the Southwest depended on such lines to haul ore down and bring supplies up, and the looping track was a common way to gain elevation without overly steep gradients. Underwood & Underwood sold stereo cards like this by the thousands, and viewed through a stereoscope, the pair of images gave the scene a sense of depth. The caption notes bridges as well, a reminder of how much engineering a mountain route required.
