The stereograph shows the railroad crossing Canon Diablo, a deep gorge in northern Arizona, on a high bridge that carried trains over the chasm. The line was pushed westward by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in the early 1880s, and its later successor, the Santa Fe, kept the crossing in service. The caption's phrase "Nature's barriers conquered by human genius" reflects the boastful tone common to railroad promotion of the period. Underwood & Underwood sold such paired views in large numbers, so the card also shows how the western rail network was pictured for armchair viewers at home.
