Rather than a town view or a station scene, this engraving lays out the whole network of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway and the lines that met it. Chartered in 1865, the company, nicknamed the Katy, aimed to carry traffic south from Missouri and Kansas toward Texas, and by the early 1870s its tracks were reaching into the cattle and cotton country of the Southwest. The map appeared opposite page 272 of the 1874 Rand McNally Railway Guide, where travelers and shippers could follow the routes and transfer points. Maps like this were a practical tool of the period, when railroads competed for through freight and a clear view of connections could decide which line got the business.
