This map lays the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad over the whole country, so the eye follows its lines from the Kansas starting point out toward the Southwest and the Pacific. The railroad was chartered in Kansas in 1859 and grew into one of the major transcontinental lines, reaching Santa Fe, New Mexico, and later Los Angeles. Maps like this were promotional tools as much as navigational ones, meant to persuade travelers, land buyers and shippers that the road connected them to distant markets. Look at how the company's network is drawn bold against the faint outlines of the other states.
