Few maps of the period so plainly tie a railway to the land it was meant to open. This 1867 sheet traces the New Orleans, Mobile and Chattanooga line across Alabama alongside the state's farming and mining regions. The year matters: the Civil War had damaged many Southern rail lines, and rebuilding them was tied to hopes of reviving cotton and bringing northern Alabama's coal and iron deposits to market. Comparing the route with the shaded districts shows how planners expected the railroad to carry crops and ore to the Gulf port at Mobile.
