Few readers of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in 1856 would have known the Victoria Bridge by name, but the magazine's December 20 issue gave them a look at the tubular iron structure the Grand Trunk Railway was building across the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. The bridge was still under construction then and was not completed until 1859. Designed under the English engineer Robert Stephenson, its long line of rectangular iron tubes carrying the track was among the most ambitious railway projects in North America, and this wood engraving shows the scale of the work over the river.
