The Cofa Bridge sits on the Oroya Railway, the line that climbed from the Peruvian coast into the Central Cordillera of the Andes. American engineer Henry Meiggs built much of the route in the 1870s and 1880s, and it was celebrated for its tunnels, switchbacks, and bridges across deep gorges at very high altitude. This stereograph was issued by the H.C. White Co., a Vermont firm that sold travel views for home stereoscopes, so the card would have let viewers far from the Andes feel as though they were crossing the gorge themselves.
