The Utica and Mohawk Valley Railway bridge at Herkimer, New York, crosses the river where the line ran between Utica and communities farther west along the Mohawk. The title's "U. and M.V." is shorthand for that company, an interurban line that carried passengers and freight through the valley in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, part of a large body of photographs the firm produced to document American towns, rivers and transportation routes. Views like this one preserve how such lines tied small river villages to larger cities nearby.
