Looking down the Rock River from the railway bridge at Janesville, Wisconsin, this view puts the city's river front and its crossing in one frame. The Detroit Photographic Company, which produced a large catalog of American scenes in the late nineteenth century, issued it under the title as a mounted print on linen, a format the firm used to make its views durable enough for handling and display. Railroad bridges like this one were central to how towns of the period connected to larger markets, and images of them often record both the engineering and the working river below.
