Few pictures on this board pair a railway station with a stone bridge quite like this one, and the view of Torrington, a market town in north Devon, shows the two side by side. Torrington's rail link brought visitors and goods into a town that had long depended on the river crossing at Rothern Bridge. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that Detroit Publishing Co. sold in the United States, and this example comes from its 1905 catalog of English views. The process was prized for its vivid, nearly painted color, which makes everyday scenes of the late 1800s look especially bright.
