Lettering reading "Central Mexicano" on the train identifies it as a Mexican Central Railway train, a line that ran north from Mexico City to El Paso, Texas, after its main route opened in 1884. Under Porfirio Díaz's government, foreign capital was welcomed into railway building, and the line carried ore, goods and passengers across terrain that had been difficult to travel by land. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed Mexico and the American West in the late 1800s. The catalog attributes it to that company by comparing it with negatives bearing similar numbers, so the individual photographer is not known.
