Bay View, on Little Traverse Bay near Petoskey, was a Methodist summer assembly and cottage community, and this 1906 view shows the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway station that served it. The railroad, whose initials appear in the title, carried visitors north to the resort grounds that the Bay View Association had developed since the 1870s. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative as part of its commercial series of Michigan and national scenes, and it later came to the Library of Congress. Pictures like this one document how rail travel shaped seasonal life in northern Michigan.
