Few stations in northeast China changed as much in the early 1930s as the one at Hsinking, the name given to Changchun after Japan set up the state of Manchukuo in 1932. The South Manchuria Railway, which Japan had taken over from Russia after the Russo-Japanese War, ran its line through the city, making the depot a key link between the new capital and the wider rail network. A 1933 print like this one records a building tied to a newly declared state, and it is useful for anyone studying how railways carried both goods and political control across the region.
