The Michigan Central depot in Ann Arbor is the subject here, captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1905 and 1915. The Michigan Central was one of the major rail lines serving the Midwest, and its stations were often the most prominent buildings in the towns they served, drawing travelers, freight, and local crowds to the platform. Detroit Publishing Company photographers traveled widely to document such scenes for commercial postcards and sales catalogs, so the plate offers a glimpse of how a small Michigan college town presented itself to the rail traveler in the early twentieth century.
