A railroad bridge crosses the Huron River at Ann Arbor, Michigan, and this view pairs it with a dam that holds back the water just nearby. Dams like this one on the Huron helped power local mills, while rail lines later crossed the valley to carry freight and passengers. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1915, when it was producing many views of towns and landscapes across the country. The large 8 by 10 inch format recorded considerable detail in the bridge and dam structures.
