This wood engraving shows the fighting at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with the railroad bridge, the armory's engine house, and the village laid out in one view as Captain Alberts' party moves against the insurgents. John Brown and his followers had seized the federal armory in October 1859, hoping to arm enslaved people in the region, and the engine house became their last stronghold before it was stormed. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran the picture on November 5, 1859, two weeks after the raid. Because the paper relied on sketches sent by its artists rather than photographs, the scene reflects an eyewitness's view of the action as it was reported at the time.
