Here the President himself is in the cab of a locomotive, during Warren G. Harding's special train trip over the Alaska Railroad in the summer of 1923. It was the first time a sitting president had traveled to Alaska, and the tour was meant to showcase the territory's rail line and its development. Harding died in San Francisco that August, before he completed the journey home, which gave the trip a lasting place in his story. Keystone View issued this stereograph around 1923, and cards like it were sold to be viewed through a stereoscope, so the scene would appear in three dimensions.
