Few photographs of a president show him at the controls of a locomotive, and that is what sets this stereograph apart. Warren G. Harding visited Alaska in the summer of 1923, and the territory's government-owned railroad, built to open the interior for mining and settlement, was one of the highlights of the trip. The image was printed on a stereo card for the parlor viewers that were popular at the time, so it was meant to look three-dimensional to a home audience. Harding died in San Francisco that August while returning from the journey, which gave the trip a lasting association with the last months of his presidency.
