Few places show the early railway age as clearly as the Semmering line, and this view is titled for Krauselklause in Styria, where the track climbs toward the pass. Carl von Ghega engineered the route, which opened in 1854 as one of the first railways built across high mountain terrain, relying on tunnels, cuttings and stone viaducts rather than switchbacks. The photochrom process behind this print, developed in Switzerland, produced color images from photographs, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers, listing this one in its 1905 catalog of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
