The Semmering line, shown here with the Rax massif rising beside it, is one of the earliest mountain railways in Europe, and it was built to climb steep grades on the border of Styria and Lower Austria. Engineer Carl von Ghega opened the route in 1854, using viaducts and tunnels to carry trains over the Semmering Pass. This photochrom comes from a Detroit Publishing Company series of views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with the catalog dated 1905, and it shows the color-lithography process that made such scenes popular with American travelers.
