Few images capture the final months of the Civil War as directly as this one, which shows Abraham Lincoln standing with Ulysses S. Grant and the Lincolns' younger son, Tad, at a railway station in 1865. Railroads carried troops, supplies and dispatches throughout the war, and by early 1865 Grant had become the Union's central commander, so a meeting at a depot reflects how closely the men who ran the war depended on the rail network. The scene is worth studying for its informality: a president, a general and a boy gathered in a busy transportation hub during a period when the outcome of the conflict was no longer in doubt.
