Few passenger cars of this era stacked three levels, which makes this Frankfurt view stand out from the usual coach photographs. Taken in 1951, it shows rolling stock in West Germany only a few years after the Second World War. The Federal Republic had just created its national railway, the Deutsche Bundesbahn, in 1949, and the country was rebuilding a network that had suffered heavy damage in the war. The Wide World label marks it as a wire-service picture, the kind of image newspapers ran to show the postwar recovery of German industry and transport.
