Cedar Level, a supply stop in southern Virginia, is the setting for this August 1864 view of a Union commissary depot. By that summer, the Army of the Potomac was tied down in the siege of Petersburg, and rations, forage and other stores reached the front by rail and wagon from the supply base at City Point. Depots like this one held the food and equipment that kept the troops fed through the siege. The print belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War Photograph Collection and is cataloged as number 819.
