Cedar Level, a Union commissary depot in Virginia, is the specific place this August 1864 view records, during the long siege of Petersburg. Supplies for the armies around Petersburg came up from the James River landings at City Point, and depots like Cedar Level stored rations, forage and equipment before they were sent on to the troops in the trenches. The print comes from the War Photograph and Exhibition Company's Civil War series, one of many views that documented the logistics behind the fighting rather than the battles themselves.
