Giesborough Point, on the Potomac opposite Washington, was the Union Army's main cavalry depot during the Civil War, where horses were received, trained, shod, and issued to mounted regiments. This glass negative, made in May 1864 and credited to the photographer David B. Woodbury, records the depot as the caption on its sleeve names it, Giesboro, Maryland. The spring of 1864 was a busy season, as Union forces were preparing for the Overland Campaign in Virginia and demand for remounts was high. Woodbury's wet collodion plates from this period are valued for the detail they give of military camps and supply sites.
