Union cavalry posted at the Chattanooga station appear in this stereograph, a pair of glass negatives made in 1864 by the wet collodion process. Federal forces had held the Tennessee city since late 1863, and its rail junction was a vital link for supplying the armies advancing toward Atlanta, so guarding the depot meant guarding a major supply line. The two plates form the left and right views that, seen through a stereoscope, give the scene its depth. The record notes that the pictures were formerly credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is uncertain.
