Culpeper Court House in Virginia was a rail hub that changed hands repeatedly during the Civil War, and this stereograph catches its railroad depot in 1862, the year of the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Union army's campaigns across northern Virginia. Glass stereographs like this one were made as matched pairs of wet collodion negatives, so viewed through a stereoscope the depot appears to stand in three dimensions. The image was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a Washington-based concern that sold views of the conflict to a public eager for news from the front. Its value to historians lies in showing how essential rail lines and their depots were to moving troops and supplies.
