Pen Mar, a mountain resort straddling the Maryland and Pennsylvania line, is the setting here, and the Blue Mountain House and its railroad depot were built to draw summer visitors up from Baltimore and other cities. The Western Maryland Railroad commissioned the view, so the depot and tracks appear as the company wanted them shown: an entry point to a fashionable retreat. The picture was made around 1892 by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose large glass negatives were prized for their sharp detail. Its size, 18 by 22 inches, captures the tracks, station, and surrounding grounds with unusual clarity.
