Few places in the Civil War changed hands as often as Chattanooga, and this stereograph shows one of its quieter consequences: Confederate prisoners waiting at the railroad depot after the Union took the city in 1863. The scene was made in 1864 by the E. & H.T. Anthony firm, a New York company that sold stereo views to a broad public hungry for images of the war. Because the two plates form a stereo pair, the men and buildings appear with depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The depot mattered because the rail line was the Union's supply and transfer route, and prisoners were moved along it toward northern camps.
