Few subjects in the Civil War photographs show the war's supply lines as plainly as this blockhouse beside the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. Its stereograph pair was made in 1864, after the Union victory at Chattanooga in late 1863 had left the city a vital base and the rail line leading out of it a constant target. Blockhouses like this one were small fortified posts, built along tracks to guard bridges and cuttings against raiders and partisan attacks. The photographs were issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company as stereo views, which were viewed through a stereoscope to give a sense of depth.
