Few pictures show the Civil War's prisoner traffic as plainly as this stereograph of Confederate captives waiting at the railroad depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1864. Made as a pair of glass plates, it was meant to be viewed in three dimensions, a format that was very popular at the time. Chattanooga had become a vital Union rail hub after its capture in late 1863, and captured Confederates were sent north from there by train. The photograph was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though the record lists that attribution as uncertain.
