Nashville's rail depot is the subject here, captured as a stereograph, a pair of side-by-side exposures meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Union forces had held Nashville since early 1862, and its railroads carried troops, supplies, and wounded men for the Federal armies in the western theater. The plates were made with the wet collodion process on glass, and the photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Because the scene was recorded during the war, the depot offers a rare view of the logistics behind Union control of the region.
