This stereograph shows the fortified railroad bridge spanning the Cumberland River at Nashville, Tennessee, with its defensive blockhouses visible on the structure. Union forces occupied Nashville in 1862, and the city's rail lines carried troops and supplies, so guarding the bridges against Confederate raiders was a constant concern. The scene dates to 1864, the year of the Battle of Nashville in December, when Union forces under George H. Thomas broke the Confederate army that had threatened the city. Because it was made as a stereograph pair, the two glass plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to give a sense of depth.
