Few views of Chattanooga in 1864 show the railroad as plainly as this stereograph, which places a line of military railcars at the depot with Lookout Mountain rising behind them. Chattanooga was a rail hub of real strategic weight: after the Union victory there in late 1863, control of its lines let Federal armies supply the push into Georgia. The image was made as a stereograph pair by the E. & H.T. Anthony firm, a New York company that sold such paired views to viewers who used hand-held stereoscopes to see depth. Two glass plates, one for each eye, record the scene in wet collodion, a process that demanded quick work in the field.
