Cedar Level, Virginia, was a Union commissary depot where supply wagons gathered during the 1864 campaign against Petersburg, and this view shows the wagon train that kept the army fed. Mathew Brady's studio made the image on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to prepare and expose each plate quickly on site. Armies besieging Petersburg depended on such wagon trains to move rations, forage and equipment from the railroad lines to the front. The scene shows how much of the war's logistics ran on animal power and long, slow lines of wagons.
