Broadway Landing, a river landing in Virginia, is the setting here, with federal artillery and ordnance stored at the depot there in 1865. The picture survives as a stereograph, two nearly identical views meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, so the stacked shells and gun carriages appear to stand out in depth. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked around Petersburg during the final campaign of the war, when Union supply lines relied on landings like this one to feed the siege. The record also lists a variant view, which suggests the site was photographed more than once.
