Giesborough Point, on the Potomac at the edge of the District of Columbia, was the site of a large Union cavalry depot, where horses were received, sorted, and issued to mounted regiments. The negative's sleeve spells the place "Geisboro" and dates the view to May 1864, a year when the Union army's need for horses and mounted troops was constant. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, was a Washington camera man who recorded army sites during the war. Wet collodion glass negatives like this one had to be exposed and developed while still wet, so the image reflects both the equipment and the fieldwork of its time.
