Few places in the Washington area have a stronger military record than Fort Myer, the Army post on the Virginia heights overlooking the Potomac, and this view turns to the depot that once served it. The post was named for Albert J. Myer, the Signal Corps chief who founded the Army's weather service. Its parade ground later hosted the Wright brothers' flight trials in 1908. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this one to record the region's buildings and transportation links.
