The record places this view at a wreck near Chatsworth, Illinois, on August 11, 1887, a head-on railroad disaster that killed dozens of passengers and became one of the deadliest rail accidents in the state's history. The photographer, T.S. Johnson of Pullman, Illinois, registered the image for copyright, which suggests he meant to sell it to a public eager for news of the crash. The print is a collotype, a photomechanical process that reproduced continuous tones without the coarse dots of a halftone, so the twisted cars and crowded wreckage keep their detail. Because such views were sold to newspapers and the public, they now serve as a record of how the disaster looked to people at the time.
