Treiberg, a village in the Black Forest of Baden, is the setting here, with the view turned toward the railway line running through the countryside. The photochrom process behind this print was a Swiss method that layered several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, over a photographic base, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America under license. Pictures of rail lines like this one appealed to travelers in the 1890s, when new routes were opening the forested valleys of southwestern Germany to visitors. The catalog entry dates the print to 1905, though the image itself is generally placed between about 1890 and 1900.
