Railway bridges and a water mill share the frame in this color lithograph of the Black Forest, a wooded upland in southwestern Germany known for its valleys and old mill sites. It was printed in Berlin around 1930 for the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, the central office that promoted domestic rail travel for the German state railways. Posters like this one invited city residents to take the train into the countryside, and the pairing of engineered rail lines with rural landscape was a common way of presenting the network as a gateway to nature.
