The Lehigh Valley Railroad's Black Diamond Express is the subject here, an engraved advertisement that presents a named passenger train as a promise of travel. The railroad took its nickname from the anthracite coal of eastern Pennsylvania, which it hauled in large volumes, so the name links the passenger service to the freight business that built the line. The print was engraved and printed by John A. Lowell & Co. of Boston and dates to about 1900, a period when railroads competed hard for travelers and used lavish pictorial advertising to do it.
