Tracks run straight back into a tight wall of trees, with the rails narrowing to a single point at the vanishing line. The composition is the kind railroad photographers prized, since a long, empty right-of-way made the lines themselves the subject. Images like this were common in the early and mid twentieth century, when rail was the country's main way to move freight and passengers and a line through the woods was an ordinary sight. Its plain black and white tones put the focus on the geometry of ties, rails and shadow rather than on any particular town or train.
